by Simpson "Doc" Balaclava / Sweaty Helmet Racing, Club Lotus Northwest The plan For the past few years I've been trying to find a mechanic for my Esprit who would look after all the little things and slowly get my car into top condition. These are things I have neither the time nor expertise to do myself. Although my regular mechanic does excellent work on major items, both he and his mechanics are far too busy with dozens of other cars for them to devote time and space to a myriad of minor items. Recently I'd heard about a shop called "Lotus Prepared by Claudius" in Cerritos, California, a fair bit south of downtown LA. Several people told me it was the best place for Esprits. Since Mark Velky was already going to the LA suburb of Chatsworth, I essentially hitched a ride south in his DeLorean and we made plans to visit not only Claudius but also the Petersen Automotive Museum and see other exotic car related sights. To add a bit of interest to the long trek through central California, I wanted to make a small detour and visit the site of James Dean's accident. During the West Coast Lotus Meet this May, our touring group came close to this site although I was unaware of it at the time.

Silver Falls Drive Recap
Event Reports

Monday, 18 September 2006
It's Monday morning, the day after our September 2006 drive to Silver Falls State Park. The sound of hard rain pounding on my roof tells me how lucky we were to have a warm, sunny day for our outing. Especially since the days leading up to the drive made it look as if my Seven would stay in the garage in favor of our family sedan, which actually has a top. In shakedown drives preparing for this trip, I got caught in a downpour on Thursday, and another Friday (slow learner). Dale Fillmore was along for the Friday drenching, and the only things we had that stayed dry were our shoes. That's a different story all by itself. Fortunately, Sunday gave us blue skies and dry roads which made for a great drive. The rain earlier in the week seemed to clean the air because visibility was incredible. Leaping from one bump to another, 187 corners or whatever it was! The number of times I've thanked God when I finished a lap there! It gave you amazing satisfaction, no doubt about it, but anyone who says he loved it is either a liar or wasn't going fast enough! - Jackie Stewart recalls the Nürburgring Those of you who didn’t make it to our midsummer lunch at Skamania Lodge not only missed out on a free lunch, but also missed out on a drive in the newest Lotus and free track time at PIR. Well, no, I just made that up, but the lunch was excellent and we did get to enjoy our cars and have a fun drive. Sunday the 13th broke with blue skies and hot weather. Arriving at the Delta Park rendezvous at 11am, I noticed several Lotuses already there. New arrivals spotted our gathering quickly and the occasional G.I. Joes customer would wander by to ask questions about our cars. We decided to wait until 11:30 to make sure we had everyone before departing. Being this is the busy wedding season at Skamania Lodge, it took a bit of research to decide on the date of the 13th for our lunch. Unfortunately, the 13th was also the Bridge Pedal event in Portland, so those who had to cross the river might be delayed in making our 11am meeting.

This was amusing to most of us, but with over 140 people at the meet, many people driving hundreds of miles to attend, it was obvious we were a group of drivers and those old days were gone.
